David's Fishing Page

Once upon a time, I used to do a fair amount of fishing in the local (S21) area. Since our little boy came on the scene, I've not done as much (for obvious reasons!).

If you're looking for places around the S21, M1 junction 30 / 31 area, I have a few suggestions, but any detailed analysis is probably worthless now because it's been so long since I visited any of them. Perhaps one day...

Aston Ponds

The bit of Aston Ponds I used to be interested in was the bit owned by Sheffield Forgemasters. As a member of their Sports Club (and former employer up to the point where Forgemasters was split up and sold), I used to get a privilege day ticket to three of the ponds there.

For whatever reason, Forgemasters sold the ponds and they're now available for fishing on a day ticket. They're nice ponds with a convenient location, just off the Aston bypass. Head towards Sheffield from M1 Jn 31. At the first rondabout, turn left towards Wales, then almost immediately left again and down the drive. There are five ponds there with good access.

Killamarsh Pond

Make as if going to Aston Ponds, but instead of turning off the main road, carry straight on, down, up and down the hill. You'll pass Rother Valley Country Park on the right. Go up the hill and eventually you'll get to a junction with a mini-roundabout. Take a right and go up the hill. On the right after about half a mile is a farm entrance. There are a couple of ponds in here, one of which is, I believe, fishable on day tickets. the other one is (or used to be) permit-only. This is Killamarsh Pond which was originally one of the feeder ponds for the Chesterfield Canal.

Pebley Pond

Make as if heading for Killamarsh Pond. Rather than taking the farm entrance, keep on that road for three miles or so. You'll go through the top end of Killamarsh and High Moor then out into more open country. You'll pass under the M1 and pass The Pebley pub. The Pond is oon the right about 1/2 mile past the pub. This is again one of the feeder ponds for the canal and runs into Harthill Pond before getting to the canal.

KJS Fisheries

This is a collection of day ticket ponds in Killamarsh. Coming down from the M1 and past Rotehr Valley Country Park, over the first mini-roundabout to the second that you turned left at earlier to get to Killamarsh Pond. This time, turn right and go down the hill. This takes you to the bottom of Killamarsh. You'll see a old high railway bridge over the road. Immediately you go under this bridge, you want to be taking a left turn and going up to the top of this lane. The fisheries is up at the top towwards the right. Part of the fisheries incorporates the old Chesterfield canal in its path through the village.
